In an Om Mandala Thangka, the sacred syllable "Om" is the central focus and main theme of the entire design. The goal is to visually express the idea that Om is the essence of the universe and that meditating on it can lead one to enlightenment.
Often, the Om symbol sits radiantly at the very center of the mandala, sometimes surrounded by the rest of the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum.” In one traditional depiction, for example, the six Tibetan syllables of Om Mani Padme Hum are written on the petals of a lotus blossom, encircling a seed syllable (HRIh) at the center – with “Om” adorning the top petal in white. This arrangement (see image below) literally places Om at the crown of the lotus, signifying its primacy as the first vibration of creation.
According to artisans, such a painting “encapsulates the sacred symbol of OM, the primordial sound of creation, within the intricate design of a round mandala”, acting as a bridge between the viewer’s consciousness and the cosmic whole. The mandala’s perfect symmetry reinforces Om’s message of universal harmony. In short, the Om Mandala Thangka visually weaves the syllable Om into the mandala’s geometry to illustrate that Om is the very fabric of the universe – everything begins and ends with this resonating truth.
Colors, Petals, and Flames: Symbolism in the Om Mandala
One reason mandalas are so captivating is their rich symbolic language. An Om Mandala Thangka is alive with meaningful colors and motifs. Let’s decode some key elements viewers will notice:
Flaming Border:
The fiery outer ring of many Om mandalas isn’t just decorative, it symbolizes transformative wisdom. These flames represent the burning away of negative emotions like anger and greed as one enters the sacred space. Like a spiritual firewall, this border protects the purity within and signals that only truth may pass through.
Lotus Petals:
A circle of lotus petals, often pink or white, sits just inside the outer ring of many mandalas. The lotus, a key Buddhist symbol, grows clean from muddy water and represents spiritual purity and awakening. In Om mandalas, the holy syllable often rests on a lotus, signifying that Om is both pure and sacred like a jewel rising from the depths.
Circular Layers:
The circular design of mandalas reflects wholeness, eternity, and the cycle of life and rebirth. These concentric rings are more than artistic structure creating a sacred space where everything is interconnected. Moving inward through these layers mirrors the spiritual path toward unity and insight.
Symmetry and Geometry:
Om Mandalas are highly symmetrical, expressing universal balance and harmony. Shapes like squares, triangles, and vajras are layered throughout, each with meaning - stability, energy, or union of opposites. The central Om is often surrounded by this geometric structure, symbolizing the cosmos built from sacred sound.
Color Symbolism:
The bold colors of Om mandalas are packed with symbolism. Red evokes vitality and transformation, blue suggests peace and space, yellow signifies clarity and abundance, green reflects balance and nature, and white stands for purity. These colors enhance the spiritual power of the mandala and help guide the viewer’s meditation inward.
- White – symbolizes purity, spiritual clarity, and the energy of peaceful transformation.
- Blue – evokes the vastness of sky/space and is associated with tranquility, compassion, and wisdom.
- Yellow/Gold – represents the earth element, abundance, and the illuminating light of the sun (enlightenment). Gold accents or yellow tones often convey sacred light and preciousness.
- Red – signifies life force and passion, as well as the transformative fire element. It can represent fervent compassion or the fiery energy of wisdom that burns away ignorance.
- Green – embodies nature, balance, and action. It is linked to the wind/air element and to active, fearless compassion (personified by the green Buddha Amoghasiddhi)
All these elements – the flames, lotus, circles, patterns, and colors – work in concert to make the Om Mandala a living tapestry of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. Each symbol is like a line of a poem, coming together to tell the story of transformation from ignorance to enlightenment.
